BNY Mellon

BNY Mellon, a critical player in global financial services, required a high-stakes migration of one of its core systems that handles vast amounts of financial data relied upon worldwide. The system, originally built on OpenVMS and written in Fortran, comprised over 9 million lines of code, including 500,000 lines of DCL. The client approached Sector7 to manage this complex migration from OpenVMS to Linux, ensuring that performance, security, and reliability were maintained throughout the process.
Sector7 led the conversion of 6 million lines of Fortran to Intel Fortran on Linux, with the target database being FairCom DB. To ensure compatibility, a set of custom APIs was developed, allowing the legacy Fortran code to access FairCom DB directly. This API integration ensured that the system could handle real-time financial transactions without compromising on performance or data integrity.
Beyond the code conversion, Sector7 conducted a thorough analysis of the existing system architecture to ensure that the migration would not affect the high availability and security standards critical to the financial services industry. Extensive testing and validation processes were carried out to ensure that the system would perform flawlessly post-migration, without any interruptions to BNY Mellon's global financial data services.
- Migration of 9 million lines of Fortran code from OpenVMS to Linux.
- Conversion of 500,000 lines of DCL scripts to ensure seamless functionality.
- Integration of FairCom DB using custom-developed APIs for direct access from Fortran applications.
- Rigorous testing and validation to maintain data integrity, security, and performance.
- Delivered a more scalable, secure, and efficient system capable of handling real-time global financial transactions.
The migration not only resolved compatibility issues but also improved the overall performance and scalability of BNY Mellon’s core systems. Sector7’s expertise ensured a seamless transition with minimal risk, allowing BNY Mellon to continue delivering critical financial services to its global clientele.
