Engagement Process

Sector7’s structured engagement process ensures a smooth, migration with a clear roadmap, reducing risks while delivering cost-effective solutions through each project phase.

The Sector7 Engagement Process

Sector7 brings extensive experience in project evaluation, language conversion, application migration, and re-engineering, coupled with powerful tools that reduce migration cost and time.

Sector7’s engagement process provides clients with a reduced-risk rehosting solution. Risks are assessed at each stage to ensure the quoted price is accurate and uninflated. The final price is determined by the project plan, applying appropriate rates to the tasks involved.

Successful Strategy

The engagement process consists of:

  • Stage One Assessment (project scope and migration strategy)
  • Stage Two Assessment (detailed migration strategy and plan)
  • Migration (design and implementation)

This approach has proven successful for other clients with similar needs, providing “step deliverables” to ensure clarity at each stage.

Full Migration Services to Linux/UNIX

Sector7 offers migration services across these platforms:

  • PDP-11 (RSTS-E) BASIC
  • DEC VAX VMS
  • DEC ALPHA OpenVMS
  • HP Itanium OpenVMS
  • INTEL OpenVMS

Stage One Assessment

The Stage One Assessment provides the foundation for a successful rehosting effort, determining a rough order of magnitude for price and duration. It includes a comprehensive review of the environment for porting to the desired platform, assessing software components such as language, databases, user interfaces, communications, and third-party software.

Time-Line: Based on previous experience, the expected duration for each step is:

  • Non-Disclosure Agreement: 1-2 days
  • Statement of Work: 1-2 days
  • Technical Overview Questionnaire: 2-5 days
  • Source Code Analysis: 2-5 days
  • Site Visit: 2-5 days
  • Analysis: up to 10 working weeks
  • Deliverables: 5-10 days

Tasks: Key tasks include inventorying the code, reviewing porting complexity, testing environments, database portability, user interface compatibility, and more.

Stage Two Assessment

The Stage Two Assessment is an in-depth analysis of the application, developing a detailed plan for the migration. It aims to finalize the price and duration for the project by applying costs to line items in the project plan. In some cases, the Stage One Assessment can be omitted, and the Stage Two Assessment becomes the starting point.

Time-Line: Expected duration for each step:

  • Non-Disclosure Agreement: 1-2 working days
  • Technical Overview: 2-5 days
  • In-depth source code analysis: 20 - 30 working days
  • Site Visit/Zoom: 5+ working days
  • Deliverables: 5-10 working days

Tasks: Tasks include configuration management planning, detailed code reviews, database and UI replacements, communication protocol planning, data migration, and more.

Sector7 Deliverables

At the end of the Stage One Assessment, Sector7 provides a comprehensive report including an executive summary, situational analysis, migration approach, tasks, application inventory, and budget estimates.

Included with the report:

  • Task list
  • Resource list
  • Dependencies
  • Task duration
  • Price per task

The goal is to provide a detailed, actionable plan for clients to move forward with the migration process.
