SBC Telecom Inc

SBC Telecom Inc., originally part of Southwestern Bell Corporation (SBC), was established to provide competitive local exchange carrier (CLEC) services following the Telecommunications Act of 1996. SBC, once a Regional Bell Operating Company (RBOC), expanded its offerings through SBC Telecom to provide local phone service to regions outside its traditional markets.
In the early 2000s, SBC Telecom operated in several states, providing telecom services and growing its footprint as a national provider. However, in 2005, SBC acquired AT&T Corp., one of the largest telecommunications companies in the U.S. Post-merger, SBC adopted the AT&T brand and became one of the largest telecom providers globally.
IBM Global Services, in partnership with Sector7, assisted SBC in porting fifteen (15) critical applications from outdated UNIX platforms, including ATT 3B2, NCR, and SUN, to IBM RS/6000 AIX systems. This project involved server consolidation and migrating applications written in C-language and Shell Scripts while maintaining compatibility with 3270 Emulation systems.
- Migrated from Sun SPARC Solaris and AT&T to IBM RS/6000 AIX systems.
- Consolidated servers, resulting in reduced system administration expenses and elimination of non-Y2K compliant hardware.
- Ported applications to AIX RS/6000 while ensuring minimal errors through extensive testing.
- Utilized Sector7's proven porting tools and UNIX System skills to streamline the migration process.
Through this successful migration, SBC Telecom reduced hardware and software expenses while enhancing system reliability. The consolidation also improved operational efficiency by decreasing the number of vendors and systems supported.
