Southwestern Bell

Southwestern Bell is one of the world's largest telecommunications companies, providing telephone services to nearly 15 million residential and business customers, along with video, Internet, and advertising services.
In 1998, Southwestern Bell approached Sector7 to migrate its applications, aiming to lower the total cost of ownership (TCO) for its Midrange Environment and achieve Year 2000 compliance. Additionally, Southwestern Bell needed a platform that could handle millions of current customers while being scalable for future growth.
The migration project involved eight mission-critical applications written in the C language, which were converted to ANSI C for compilation on an IBM C compiler. Some re-engineering was required for the 3270 terminals to ensure compatibility with the new system. Sector7, with over 15 years of migration experience, provided a seamless transition with minimal interruption to Southwestern Bell’s services.
- Migrated from HP-UX and Sun Solaris to IBM SystemP.
- Converted 1,230,000 lines of C/C++ to ANSI C.
- Re-engineered the 3270 terminals for better integration.
- Ensured the platform met Year 2000 compliance while supporting millions of customers.
The results of the project significantly improved Southwestern Bell’s ability to provide service to its customers and positioned the company for future growth.
